A Guide to Sign Permits in Pittsburgh PA

As a small business, you know you need exterior signage to get customers to come to your store. But did you know that there are certain rules and regulations regarding the installation of signs in Pittsburgh, PA? You should be aware of these requirements so you don’t get slapped with a fine or worse. Learn more about the steps you need to take to properly get a sign permit for and install an exterior sign.

What’s the Deal with Sign Permits?

If you want to install signs in Pittsburgh, you need sign permits. These are required to install or build a new sign. They’re also necessary if you want to enlarge, modify or remove a sign that is already installed.

Sign permits allow the city to make sure that your sign will meet certain standards of safety and design. Safety is probably the key word here, as you don’t want your sign to block lines of sight or traffic signals. However, designing your sign so it’s not a visual nuisance can also factor into the requirements. For example, if you want to install an illuminated sign, you be required to obtain a separate electrical permit.

What are the Steps?

First, if you are the property owner, you must apply for a zoning review at the city’s Zoning Counter. After the work is approved by the Zoning Department, you as the applicant will head to the Department of Permits, Licenses, and Inspections’ (PLI) Permit Counter.

The following items are required for the PLI review:

  • A completed Sign Application.
  • Two set of construction drawings that have been prepared and sealed by a state licensed architect or engineer. Please note that these drawings should detail structural design loads as well as how the sign with be supported or attached to a building.
  • Any new sign requires an Occupancy Permit as well.
  • As stated above, any illuminated sign requires a separate electrical permit.

After the permit has been reviewed and approved, you will need the Sign Contractor’s registration number, or SGN. You will also be required to pay a permit fee with a check, money order or an in-person credit card payment. Be aware that you will also need to arrange for any required inspections.

For more information on sign permits, check out PLI’s website on signs, located here.
